Diversity Update June 2011

06/17/2011

Greetings from North Brookings Hall.

I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. I plan to write to you several times this summer to let you know about activities that the Office of the Provost has been engaged in this school year. This first note will cover issues of diversity.

Progress with Gender Pay Equity

In response to last year’s report on Gender Pay Equity, school deans have been working to address gaps in pay. The Faculty Senate received a presentation on May 9th (my report begins on page 4 of the minutes) summarizing progress, a highlight of which is that three Danforth schools actually show female faculty are paid more than men. The School of Medicine is in the process of similar analysis; this issue continues to be a top priority on both campuses.

Diversity and Inclusion Grants Support Faculty, Staff Initiatives

Diversity and Inclusion Grants totaling $151,183 were awarded to eight teams for initiatives ranging from a School of Medicine community-building retreat to leadership and negotiation workshops for women faculty in all schools. Successes from last year’s grants include underrepresented minority visits to campus and several hires through “The Serenade Program.”

Professional Leadership Academy & Network Launched

Our initial PLAN cohort of 27 Danforth Campus staff is participating in a year-long professional development course, with classes ranging from strategic thinking and leadership in higher education to team building.

I welcome your questions or comments.
