Eden Attar is a Master’s student in musicology at Washington University in St. Louis, where she studies the musical educational project of Sesame Street and its intersections with anarchist education, distance learning, and virtual worlds. Attar leads the trio Meadowlarke with Ben Oye and Ari Freedman. Compositionally, Attar has been deeply inspired by the mystics and music of Sun Ra. She combines early music (madrigals, period instruments, modal counterpoint) and new music (turntables, modular synthesis, dance music) to create pieces which grow legs, dance, and sweat, resulting in new forms of performer-audience relationship. Attar engages in historical play and creative anachronism as a compositional method and as a tool for understanding the past and the future. Attar is an alumna of the University of Chicago where she studied anthropology, and a former student of Mwata Boweden, Sam Pluta, and Craig Trompeter. She has written and performed for The Metropolis Ensemble, Face the Music, and the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago.
