Jorge Rios Morales

Jorge Rios is an artist deeply influenced by his Cuban and Latin American identity. He grew up an avid consumer of Magical Realism literature, especially the work of Jorge Luis Borges, Juan Rulfo and the Cuban Alejo Carpentier, who developed the term “Lo Real Maravilloso” (The Marvelous Real) to describe the fantastical quality of Latin American history and culture: where everyday life is intrinsically mixed with pre-Columbian indigenous mysticism, the Spanish Catholic dogma and African pantheistic religions. He understands that this dynamic between present and past is a construction told through the narratives of history, literature, philosophy, poetry, theatre, etc. Because for contemporary art, truth inhabits more in culture than anywhere else.
