The PhD Trends dashboard shows summary data about research doctoral programs to provide prospective and current PhD students, and faculty with useful information about programs of interest. It includes admission rates, enrollment counts and demographics, retention rates, and the average length of time it takes for matriculated students to complete their degree. Professional doctoral degrees, including the MD, JD, and others, are not included. If you have any questions, please contact vpge@wustl.edu.
1. The dashboard includes PhD students in Arts and Sciences, the Brown School, McKelvey School of Engineering, Olin Business School, the School of Medicine, and the Vagelos Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences (DBBS). Doctor of Science (DSc) students in McKelvey School of Engineerings and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) students in Olin Business School are also included.
2. When calculating retention, students who are currently enrolled, on a leave of absence, suspended, or have a status of degree candidacy extended are counted as enrolled/retained. Enrollment, retention, and graduation status are as of early Spring 2024.
3. Time to degree is calculated from students’ start date to graduation date, including any time when students were on a leave of absence. Schools/units may have specific reporting requirements for how to calculate time to degree (e.g., defense date vs. conferral date) and time to completion may be influenced by student program changes, transferred credits, or other variables.
